Jon Stewart on Crossfire

UPDATE Thanks to our friend and reader Justin for sending in the full Crossfire episode. At 15 minutes, the file is too large to host, but we've edited it down to just over 2 minutes of highlights. Enjoy:

Thanks again Justin!

We didn't think to record Crossfire today for the same reason we didn't think to record Jerry Springer. Watching Crossfire is like sticking your head in a blender and setting it to puree.

The Daily Show's Jon Stewart appeared today on Crossfire and took out the trash: (Full transcript)
BEGALA: Let me get this straight. If the indictment is -- if the indictment is -- and I have seen you say this -- that...

STEWART: Yes.

BEGALA: And that Crossfire reduces everything, as I said in the intro, to left, right, black, white.

STEWART: Yes.

BEGALA: Well, it's because, see, we're a debate show.

STEWART: No, no, no, no, that would be great.

BEGALA: It's like saying The Weather Channel reduces everything to a storm front.

STEWART: I would love to see a debate show.

BEGALA: We're 30 minutes in a 24-hour day where we have each side on, as best we can get them, and have them fight it out.

STEWART: No, no, no, no, that would be great. To do a debate would be great. But that's like saying pro wrestling is a show about athletic competition.

CARLSON: Jon, Jon, Jon, I'm sorry. I think you're a good comedian. I think your lectures are boring.

STEWART: Yes.

CARLSON: Let me ask you a question on the news.

STEWART: Now, this is theater. It's obvious. How old are you?

CARLSON: Thirty-five.

STEWART: And you wear a bow tie.

CARLSON: Yes, I do. I do.

STEWART: So this is...

CARLSON: I know. I know. I know. You're a...

STEWART: So this is theater.

CARLSON: Now, let me just...

CARLSON: Now, come on.

STEWART: Now, listen, I'm not suggesting that you're not a smart guy, because those are not easy to tie.

CARLSON: They're difficult.

STEWART: But the thing is that this -- you're doing theater, when you should be doing debate, which would be great.

BEGALA: We do, do...

STEWART: It's not honest. What you do is not honest. What you do is partisan hackery. And I will tell you why I know it.

CARLSON: You had John Kerry on your show and you sniff his throne and you're accusing us of partisan hackery?

STEWART: Absolutely.

CARLSON: You've got to be kidding me. He comes on and you...

STEWART: You're on CNN. The show that leads into me is puppets making crank phone calls.

10 Comments:

  • Hahahahaha, wish you had the clip of this.

I don't agree with Stewart's politics, but still more than not enjoy The Daily Show, and these comments are dead-on. Crossfire IS theater. Crossfire IS a joke. I never understood how anyone could watch that program and (1) not go insane from the idiocy or (2) actually feel like they're being informed or enlightened.

  • Give us the 15 minute video!

  • Really the 15 minute Video needs to be put up....perhaps you can just do the audio only....the other clip shows the faces...it does not get much different than that...but the audio would be wonderful.

I was lucky enough to catch the entire thing live...its was fairly remarkable...during the commercials you really did not expect to see him come back...but they had him back.

BTW CNN runs the Daily Show in foreign markets....its part of their own broadcasts.

  • Thats some of the best television I have seen in a long time. How great was it when John called Carlson a 'dick' at the end? Someone had to say it....

  • That show is crap. Hannity & Colmes at least have substance. And the audience only fuels the cheap shots and creates a circus.

I love how he picks on Tucker, man I hate that guy.

  • This yelling-at-each-other, lack of respect nonsense started with the McLaughlin Group and spread like a disease. It's coarsened our political life into a game-- no wonder we can't get anything done.

I am a conservative Republican in New York, so you know I have a sense of humor. Jon Stewart hit it right on the head. I wasn't going to buy his book, but now I am, as a symbol of support.

I think he should get the puppets to call into some of these so-called political shows. Let Chris Mathews yell at a suffed dummy instead of...well, bad example.

  • Thank you Jon for beig real AND funny. Yes someone needs to speak truth to these people but it is more than just Jon Stewart who needs to do so. We all need to stand up to all that the Bush Regime/elitist rich have been about and say NO MORE! Take back our country, reform it to serve the peoples and planets best interests and get to living life consciously. We need to grow up and become responsible for what we've got and what we will NOW, have.We are better than what we have been producing through our politicians works. We ARE much bigger than we have been. The time for practicing and living from our own greatness (however that shows up)is now, not some time in an imagined future. The moment point is our point of power.
