The Conversation

We've taken a look at this video several times now and it would make the most sense if Bush were saying something along the lines of, "Talk to ya on election night" -- "Where will you be staying" -- "We'll find you"

PunditGuy points out a comment at JohnKerry.com:
FYI - I am deaf and can read lips okay...at the end of debate where Kerry and Bush shook hands.. Bush was asking Kerry, Can I talk to you later tonight? Kerry said sure then Bush said where would you be?

Earlier this morning we contacted Gallaudet University, and a few other interpreter service centers and put in requests to have an expert evaluate the tape. Unfortunately we recorded the debate a lower resolution than is needed to form an expert opinion. We will be recording a replay at high resolution, and will update this post when something definative can be said about it.

If it turns out to be what we secretly think it might be, we only have one thing to say to President Bush: The first rule of Fight Club is, you do not talk about Fight Club.

  • I'm deaf and it looks like Bush said "where you going to be?". The rest was just too fast and they were moving their heads around too much. I wouldn't make much out of it - seems to be just small talk. Besides they would be really stupid to be talking about deals, if any, right out there in the public.

  • I want to make it VERY clear, before Kedwards decides to out me, or some f***ing Dem candidate decides to make fun of me, that I am NOT deaf and got exactly the same "Where're you going to be" Lola did, for what it's worth.

  • I watched this several times, and I see something different.

The key is where Bush purses his lips for the clear 'W' word. If you watch carefully, he follows with what I see as 'S' or "SH", and it looks very much to me like that part of the comment is something 'I wish you the best", because I picked out a "I...W..SH...Y...TH...B" in his lip movement. Kerry's response was lost do to camera rotation, but no, I don't agree with the "call you later" interpretation at all. It's just not there.

  • Bush's last comment, by the way, is definitely "good job". So I see the conversation as follows:

Bush: ".... I wish you the best..."

    Kerry: [lost to camera angle]

Bush: "... where will you be next?" [I think in reference to the travelling both men have ahead of them]

Kerry: "Ohio, and then [lost to angle]"

    Bush: "Good job tonight"

    Kerry: "Thank you."

  • Go to the daily recycler and see the video that he posted of Bush asking Kerry to talk offline, AND KERRY PATTS BUSH ON THE BACK to see if he's got a reciever.

Looks like he does not rely on his own internets rumor-mill... He's chekin' it out himself.

Waiting for your report, Mr. Kerry.

  • DJ.. It's incredible -- now that you write out that script, I see the exact same thing.
