Sloppy: CBS Altered Memo

Jeff from Shape of Days and Allahpundit bring up an interesting question: Why is it that the PDFs over at USA Today and Fox News don't show the same underline markings on the May 19th memo that appear on the PDF available at CBS News? Below is a screenshot of the May 19th memo as it appears in the PDF on the CBS News website:

We got to thinking about it and decided that perhaps there are marks on the document because a video producer at 60 Minutes needed to know which sections to zoom into for the snippet-shots like this one:

But that can't be the case. Because the snippet-shot shown above is from the May 4th memo, which doesn't have any underline markings on it in the CBS PDF.

Adding to the mystery is why the May 19th memo appears without markings during its brief appearance on screen during the 60 Minutes broadcast. Screenshot below. Click here for the larger version.

A zoomed and contrasted view of the screenshot reveals no markings on the memo when it appeared on TV:

CBS either altered the memo that appeared on TV and ended up in the hands of other news organizations, or it altered the memo that ended up on the web. One or the other must be true, because both versions of the memo have been presented by CBS.

Maybe we should check the original .DOCument.

  • It's not just the underlining or lack thereof.

The USA Today six-page .pdf also has two additional purported memos from Col. Killian that aren't on the CBS website and weren't mentioned in the "60 Minutes" broadcast, which AllahPundit's post brought to my attention, and about which I've written at more length on my own blog (with a link to your excellent post here). They have their own peculiarities.

  • CBS already has admitted that the version made available on the web was a copy of the version that came into the office. They probably had many copies.

They used that as a defense - "You are looking at a degraded version." Obviously, the solution is to replace the current web version with a high res scan, and make the original available to outside experts.

  • Have you also noticed how the 6 memo set follows a logical sequence of events? First LTC Killian asks for status of physicals, then orders 1LT Bush to report to his. Then it councels him about the investment on his carreer then it removes hime from flight status, then asks how to handle the evaluation and then talks about back dating and sugar coating. These are not random memos. They are story telling at its best.

  • What's flipping hilarious is the the editor/graphic artist used a courier-eque font for the pull quote...Looks like one called American Typewriter.
